The Best U.S. Lake Destinations

The U.S. is full of stunning lakes and equally beautiful resorts surrounding them. Lakes make an idyllic travel destination for a few reasons. Namely, they’re without the risks associated with the ocean; they can be less expensive than ocean-side destinations and lake destinations can often milder weather than coastal spots.

Lake Placid is one of the country’s most well-known lakes and for good reason. Located in upstate New York, Lake Placid’s peak season is between May and August if you want to enjoy water activities. If you’re more interested in hiking the trails surrounding the lake and enjoying colorful foliage, then it’s probably best to go in fall.

The lodge itself is built to be like a classic camp. You’ll find a private beach that includes the opportunity for activities such as kayaking and canoeing.

Crater Lake Lodge is the only in-park lodging options within Crater Lake National Park. Crater Lake itself is known as being one of the best U.S. lakes for scuba divers, particularly since it’s very deep and very blue. It’s surrounded by rocky peaks that add to the awe-inspiring scenery of this lake and the national park.

Crater Lake is actually the deepest in the U.S., thanks to its fascinating volcanic history, and it’s the 9th deepest in the world.

If you’re not a diver or prefer something a little less rugged when you’re at Crater Lake you can take a Wizard Island boat cruise.
